Unless your a culinary daredevil, these gadgets are a waste of time (and money)!

The kitchen is the perfect place to get creative. There are some life-saving gadgets that take your culinary game to a whole new level out there. And then, some seem more like a gimmick than a useful tool. Not all gizmos are created equal, and while they might seem like a good idea at the time, they might end up leaving you with buyer’s remorse. Resist the temptation of buying these items for your kitchen.

1. The Banana Slicer

When have you ever looked at a perfectly ripe banana and thought, hold on, what this banana needs is to be sliced into perfectly uniform pieces? Never, probably. But banana slicers are most certainly a thing, and we guarantee you they’ll end up collecting dust, forgotten in the back of a kitchen drawer. It’s nothing revolutionary that a regular knife can’t do. Sure, it might slice your banana into neat little rounds, but at what cost? The time spent cleaning it is longer than it takes to slice a banana with a knife, and it’s so oddly specific that you’ll wonder why you ever thought you needed it in the first place.

2. The Avocado Saver

Avocados—nature’s butter, the antioxidant-packed foundation of guac can come at a cost. They have a ripening window comparable to the operating hours of the DMV: basically nonexistent. If they’re not too firm, they’re a brown, mushy, useless mess, so every time you add one to your cart you know your making a gamble. The avocado saver is a contraption designed to keep your avocados fresh for longer. Sounds great in theory, right? Wrong. Not only does it fail to prevent your avocado from oxidizing, but it also takes up precious fridge real estate, leaving you with less space for the essentials.

3. The Egg Separator

If you like your egg whites, you know there’s a small step between cracking your eggs and letting them hit a sizzling pan: separating them from the yokes. The Egg Separator is a handy tool designed to make this daunting process simple. Or so they say. It’s not that it doesn’t work—it does, but you can get the same job done by gently cracking your eggs and using the shells the separate the whites. And it’s one less thing to wash.

4. The Electric Wine Opener

Why bother with pesky corkscrews and manual labor when you can have a machine do it for you? At just the press of a button, the electric wine opener can effortlessly uncork your favorite vintages with the push of a button. Sounds convenient, right? This one might get some side eye, but . . . while it does take the effort out of removing your cork, it doesn’t save you that much time. Besides, pulling out a cork isn’t exactly straining. It makes for a nice housewarming gift, maybe, but an essential it is not!

5. The Garlic Press

We love a delicious, garlicky meal. But preparing it can be a real pain. The garlic press is a nifty little gadget designed to crush garlic cloves with ease. Sounds like a dream come true, right? This thing is more trouble than it’s worth. It leaves you with a garlicky mess to clean up, but it also has a knack for trapping your precious garlic in its tiny metal jaws, leaving you to pry it out with the determination of a squirrel trying to crack a nut. Save yourself the hassle and invest in a good ol’ garlic mincer. Your fingers will thank you.

6. The Fancy Tumbler

Okay, hear us out. We’re not dragging tumblers. They’ve innovated our drinkware by keeping our hot drinks piping, steaming warm, and our cold drinks ice cold for hours. Plus, they don’t sweat and with so many fun colors and designs, they’re fun to collect. We’re not talking about those tumblers. The issue is with the ones you can’t toss in the dishwasher. Who needs another thing to hand wash? Besides, there are so many varieties out there that are dishwasher safe, so why would you even consider adding one that adds any sort of inconvenience? Sip your tea, smoothie, or iced coffee in peace knowing you don’t have to deal with the mess afterward.

7. The Herb Scissors

When you want to elevate a dish from mediocre to magnificent, herbs are the confetti of the culinary world. Herb scissors are a set of tiny blades designed to make quick work of your herbs with a single snip. While their intentions are good, they don’t really make sense. Some of them struggle to make clean cuts, and you’re better off just using a pair of kitchen scissors, or dedicating a pair to using for your food.
